Sugar-free sweets aren't so scary! Find out the truth about natural sweeteners

When you tell someone that you eat sugar-free sweets, you are often met with a raised eyebrow and a suspicious look. "It's definitely full of chemicals," we hear regularly at Fit Cake. What if we told you that natural sweeteners have been with mankind for centuries and are friendlier to our bodies than white sugar?

The myth of 'artificial' sweeteners

The truth is that not all sweeteners are created equal. While some are indeed created in the lab, at Fit Cake we rely on those that nature created for us long ago. Our favourites? Stevia and erythritol - two natural wonders that allow us to create delicious desserts without remorse.

Stevia - nature's sweet gift

Imagine a plant whose leaves are up to 300 times sweeter than regular sugar, yet have zero calories. Sound like science fiction? Yet stevia, which grows naturally in South America, has been used as a sweetener for centuries!

Importantly, stevia does not raise blood glucose levels, making it an ideal choice not only for people who are watching their weight, but also for diabetics. We use the highest quality stevia extract in our products, which adds sweetness without the characteristic aftertaste found in cheaper products.

Erythritol - a natural sugar alcohol

The other star of our kitchen is erythritol. This natural sugar alcohol is found in fruit and fermented foods. It has about 70% of sugar sweetness, but virtually zero calories - our bodies cannot digest it, so it passes through us almost untouched.

The biggest advantage of erythritol is that it tastes and behaves almost identical to sugar in baked goods. It doesn't have a strange aftertaste, it doesn't crystallise in a strange way and it doesn't leave an unpleasant feeling in the mouth. It simply works - naturally and safely.

Why is natural better?

At Fit Cake, we believe that what we eat should be as close to nature as possible. Instead of bombarding the body with refined sugar, which causes insulin spikes and is addictive like a drug, we choose ingredients that nature has perfected over thousands of years. Our body knows what to do with them, and we can enjoy the sweet taste without negative consequences.
